The parent union of one of Nevada’s most powerful labor groups is weighing in on a contentious Clark County Commission primary race.

The new PAC, called Protect Nevada Women, is sending out mail pieces and set up a website attacking Clark County Commission candidate Marco Hernandez, who is challenging Democratic state Sen. Tick Segerblom in a Democratic primary to succeed termed-out Commissioner Chris Giunchigliani.

The PAC — Protect Nevada Women — filed registration paperwork with the secretary of state on March 26, and discloses that it is affiliated with UNITE HERE TIP State and Local Fund, the parent union of Culinary Workers Union Local 226.

The piece links Hernandez and “Tweets Like Trump’s” and features a cartoon version of the 45th president juxtaposed with a tweet from Hernandez’s employer, Laborers Local 872, thanking embattled casino executive Steve Wynn for “putting union construction workers to work.” The tweet came after a major Wall Street Journal story in January recounting dozens of employees accusing Wynn of sexual misconduct.

The flyer claims Hernandez's organization is “funding his campaign for county commissioner.” At least $40,000 of the $46,000 Hernandez reported raising in his 2017 campaign finance report came from the laborers union, or affiliated political groups.

In a brief interview, Hernandez said he was proud to a member of the union and was disappointed that the campaign had turned negative.

“I think it’s sad, that this is all they got on me,” he said. “This is sad that they got to go that far. I’m not about being negative, I’ve always been a positive individual.”
