Former First Lady Michelle Obama headlined a get out the vote rally at Chaparral High School in Las Vegas on Sunday, telling attendees that “not voting is like letting your grandma pick your clothes out."

Obama warned of efforts around the county to make it harder to vote and urged the crowd not to cede important decisions to others who are more likely to go to the polls.

“You’re just saying, you do it — and you may not like what they decide. You might not like living with the consequences of other people’s choices. But that’s what happens when you stay home. You’re essentially putting your future in the hands of others,” she said. “And the truth is, that’s exactly what some folks are hoping that you’ll do. They’re hoping that you’ll just let them make these important decisions for you, just sit back, let me figure this out for you.”

She also opined about the current state of politics in her plea that Nevada voters participate this cycle, which features a marquee Senate race, a gubernatorial contest and six statewide ballot measures.

"Believe me, I am frustrated too. I am sick of all the chaos, and the nastiness of our politics. It’s exhausting. And frankly, it’s depressing. So I understand wanting to shut it all out,” she said. “But here’s the problem — while some folks are frustrated and tuned out and staying home on Election Day, trust me — other folks are showing up. Democracy continues with or without you.”

The stop is part of a “week of action” staged by the nonpartisan group When We All Vote, whose co-chairs include Obama, Tom Hanks, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Janelle Monáe, Chris Paul, Faith Hill, and Tim McGraw.
