Podcast: dyslexia and campaign finance

The IndyMatters podcast dug into two very different topics this week — dyslexia and campaign finance. The first half of the show focused on Jackie Valley's reporting about how a regent with the Nevada System of Higher Education has made it his mission to expand awareness about — and services for — students with dyslexia.

Hayes' journey began after his then-6-year-old daughter was diagnosed with dyslexia, which makes reading and spelling difficult, last year. Frustrated by his search for services that could help her, he's now trying to bring more training to Nevada educators.

From there, we jumped into the complicated world of campaign finance. Jacob Solis spent months sifting through and analyzing campaign contributions to Gov. Steve Sisolak. What he found: In his 2018 bid for governor, Sisolak raised more than $11.3 million dollars. Nearly all of it, $11.1 million, came from large contributions of $200 or more. Solis talked about some of the interesting trends he uncovered in the reporting process.

We’re looking out for Nevada — and for you

At The Nevada Independent, we spend our days monitoring government meetings so the public knows what’s happening behind the scenes, holding powerful institutions accountable, and helping you understand the issues that affect you.

In this critical election year, that mission is especially important.

In 2026, we’re closely watching state races, policy changes, and public accountability — so our community has accurate, trusted information when it matters most.

We’ve set a goal to raise $48,000 by April 24. Every gift moves us closer.
