Republicans, Democrats come out swinging against gubernatorial candidates day after primary

Neither the Republican nor the Democratic governors associations wasted any time Wednesday after the primary in attempting to define the two candidates who will face off in November to replace Gov. Brian Sandoval.

The twin websites — WhoIsSteveSisolak.com from the Republican Governors Association and WhoOwnsAdam.com from the Democratic Governors Association — touch off what will be a protracted and costly general election fight between Attorney General Adam Laxalt and Clark County Commission Chair Steve Sisolak. Laxalt easily coasted past his Republican primary challengers Tuesday night, while Sisolak defeated Clark County Commissioner Chris Giunchigliani by 11 points in his quest to become Nevada’s next governor.

The anti-Sisolak website questions whether Nevada families can trust Sisolak, saying that Sisolak has an “established record of voting for tax hikes for Nevada’s working families,” “embraced extremism” and “flip-flopped” on major issues and received hundreds of thousands of dollars of campaign contributions around days when the Clark County Commission met.

A tough Democratic primary against the progressive Giunchigliani forced the more moderate Sisolak to run to the left over the past several months, a point that Republicans are already hoping to capitalize on. Speaking to KNPR this morning, Laxalt called Sisolak “the most liberal candidate who has ever run for governor” in Nevada, a point the RGA is hoping to drive home too.

“Now, after spending months running to the left in order to appease his party’s extreme liberal base, Sisolak has given voters even more reasons as to why they should not trust him with their state’s highest office,” said RGA spokesman John Burke in a statement.

Sisolak, in an interview just before Laxalt’s, reiterated that he is socially liberal and fiscally conservative but that he considers himself a progressive because “the root of the word progressive is progress.”

“Just voting no doesn’t get anywhere,” Sisolak said.

Laxalt’s campaign also released a new 30-second ad on Wednesday titled “Pays,” first reported by journalist Steve Sebelius, elaborating on a line of attack his campaign launched Wednesday night, with Laxalt’s campaign manager describing Sisolak in a statement as a “corrupt career politician.”

The ad suggests that Sisolak and those close to him have profited off of his position on the Clark County Commission, highlighting, in one instance, a multimillion settlement Sisolak received from the county in a lawsuit over land values affected by airport height restrictions.

“Politics pays for Steve Sisolak. Sisolak was elected to serve taxpayers, instead he sued them,” the ad says.

Laxalt’s campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment about where the ad will run or how much money it plans to spend on it.

At the same time, the Democrats are hoping to make an issue out of Laxalt’s penchant for dodging questions from the media. In fact, when asked by KNPR this morning if he expects to be doing more interviews in the near future, Laxalt pivoted to talking about the importance of connecting with voters in Clark County.

“Adam Laxalt will always put his donors and special interests before Nevada’s families, and his record proves it,” the Democrats’ new website says. “It’s why he refuses to answer even the most basic follow up questions about policy.”

The website attacks Laxalt for asking a top Nevada gaming regulator to intervene in a lawsuit on behalf of one of his biggest donors, billionaire casino magnate Sheldon Adelson; paints him as a puppet of the conservative Koch Brothers and highlights friction between him and Sandoval; and puts a spotlight on what they describe as Laxalt’s “fringe social views,” including opposing gay marriage and opposing abortion.
