Gov. Brian Sandoval said President Donald Trump’s disparaging remarks about immigrants from “shithole” countries such as Haiti was “unacceptable and offensive.”

Speaking to reporters in Las Vegas following a National Governors Association event, Sandoval said that while he was aware the president was disputing using the slur to describe Haiti and other African countries, the comments — if true — weren’t a “positive” message to the rest of the world.

Sandoval added that he’s supportive of finding a permanent solution for recipients of the shuttered Deferred Action of Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program as part of a comprehensive immigration reform bill, and that the president’s comments weren’t helpful.

“We need finality," Sandoval said. “We’ve been talking about this for as long as I’ve been governor, and long before that, and so my message would be for Congress to take this issue up once and for all.”

Sandoval also said he would support Congress extending protections for Salvadorian recipients of the Temporary Protected Status program, which the Trump administration announced plans to end earlier this month. More than 200,000 immigrants from El Salvador who live in the U.S. were allowed to stay in the country under the program, including an estimated 4,800 in Nevada.

“My response would be the same as what I’ve said in regards to DACA individuals,” he said. “These are people who have lived and worked and contributed to our society in a very positive way, and so I would like to find a way where they can hopefully remain in the U.S.”
