The Asian Chamber of Commerce PAC announced Wednesday it is backing Democrat Susie Lee for Congress although the organization backed her opponent, Republican businessman Danny Tarkanian, for the same seat last cycle.

Sonny Vinuya, the PAC’s vice chair and president of the Las Vegas Asian Chamber of Commerce, said in a statement that Lee “understands the needs of Asian-American entrepreneurs” and will “roll up her sleeves, solve problems, and get results in Washington on behalf of the business community in Southern Nevada.” In a follow up interview, Vinuya said that both Lee and Tarkanian did “very well” in the interview process but that Lee was “new blood, new energy.”

“We endorsed Danny in the past, so we kind of know what we’ve got with him,” Vinuya said. “Of course as far as being business-friendly, Danny has ran that platform for awhile. Now Susie, same thing, although of course history wise we don’t have as much with Susie as we do with Danny as far as the history of being business friendly. But maybe different factors, new blood, new energy — she interviewed very well.”

Vinuya also noted that the PAC has different members than it did two years ago, which may have contributed to the difference of opinion.

The endorsement marks the second time an organization has decided to back Lee after supporting Tarkanian last cycle. The National Association of Realtors announced in August that it was backing Lee, calling her a “common sense problem solver.”

Lee and Tarkanian are running against each other to represent Nevada’s swingy 3rd Congressional District, which covers suburban Summerlin, Henderson and the Southwest and also stretches south to Searchlight and Laughlin. Democrats have about a 5,700-person, or 1.3 percentage point, voter registration advantage over Republicans in the district.
