Former Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority Chairman Lawrence Weekly agreed Wednesday to pay almost $2,400 in fines after the state ethics commission found he had violated Nevada law when he used LVCVA funds to buy airline gift cards for a personal trip to Texas with his daughter.

The fines are the result of a near five-months-long investigation into Clark County Commissioner Weekly’s alleged misuse of convention authority money and come amid lingering allegations that LVCVA employees spent nearly $20,000 in airline gift cards on personal travel. The ethics commission’s decision was first reported by the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

In the agreement, the commission said Weekly “intentionally and knowingly” violated ethics law when he “used his position as an LVCVA Board Member to secure an unwarranted privilege or advantage for himself,” and that as an elected official, he should have been “aware of the statutes and regulations governing public officers.”

Even so, his fines were mitigated by several factors, including his cooperation with the investigation, his public acknowledgment of the use of the gift cards and a partial $700 reimbursement of the $1,400 used to buy the cards. The commission ultimately settled on two fines of $1,000 and $1,398 each, the latter being double the un-reimbursed value of the cards.
