Gov. Steve Sisolak has appointed Jhone Ebert, a senior deputy commissioner with the New York State Education Department and former Clark County School District administrator, as his new superintendent of public instruction.

In a press release sent Monday, Sisolak announced that Ebert would take over from acting Superintendent Dr. Jonathan Moore effective April 2nd. Moore will return to his previous position as deputy superintendent of student achievement. He had been filling in for previous Superintendent Steve Canavero, who resigned in February.

“Jhone is a life-long educator and change leader with extensive experience both in the classroom and in administrative roles, including 25 years in Nevada schools,” Sisolak said in a statement. “I have no doubt that she is the best person to get our schools back on track and set Nevada students up for success in K-12 and beyond.”

Ebert was one of three applicants (out of an initial pool of 33) chosen by the State Board of Education and forwarded to Sisolak, who made the final hiring decision. Ebert previously told the board that if hired, she would meet with all 63 lawmakers in Carson City to discuss education policy.

Prior to taking her job in New York, Ebert worked for 25 years in the Clark County School District, starting as a mathematics teacher in Las Vegas and eventually becoming the district’s chief innovation and productivity officer and chief technology officer

As a Nevada educator for 25 years, I am deeply passionate about improving educational outcomes for all of Nevada’s children,” she said in a statement. “I am excited to get to work with our educators, parents, and community members to make sure every student has the tools they need to build a home, life, and future.”
