Republican Danny Tarkanian and Democrat Susie Lee traded barbs over their personal backgrounds while largely reiterating their policy positions on a host of issues including gun control, education funding and border security at their first congressional debate Saturday night.

During the first half of the hour-long debate, Tarkanian criticized the nonprofit education organization Lee used to helm, Communities in Schools of Nevada, for taking money away from school budgets and projects to fund its programs, while Lee shot back that Tarkanian “got a $17 million bailout by the federal government,” a reference to a $17 million judgment the federal government obtained against Tarkanian in the wake of a real estate deal gone bad and his subsequent bankruptcy. The second half of the debate, hosted by KLAS-TV and moderated by journalists Steve Sebelius and Patrick Walker, will air this coming Saturday.

Both candidates, who are running for Nevada’s 3rd Congressional District, reiterated their support for universal background checks on gun sales and transfers, a position Tarkanian first took at a Republican primary debate in May after previously calling a ballot measure to do just that a threat to Americans’ constitutional rights. They also both expressed support for increased border security, including fences, better use of technology and securing ports of entry, though neither would name a number for what level of funding they believe should be devoted to it.

Tarkanian also reiterated his support for a nationalized school choice program, while Lee advocated leveraging public-private partnerships such as the one the Clark County School District has with Communities in Schools in order to improve education outcomes. Like border security, neither candidate was willing to put a price tag on how much additional money should be devoted to education.

Tarkanian said that he would like to reduce “burdensome regulations” on small businesses, but when asked for three he would eliminate, he declined to specify any, saying “common sense will tell you which ones are reasonable.” Asked about impeaching Trump, Lee again called impeachment discussions a “distraction” but said that she believes that the Russia investigation should continue.
