As the calendar races toward the high-stakes midterm elections, President Donald Trump is visiting Las Vegas today to rally support for Republican candidates.

Expect worse-than-usual traffic headaches during the evening commute as a result: The “Make America Great Again" rally will be held at 7 p.m. at the Las Vegas Convention Center, with doors opening at 4 p.m. It’s the 11th rally Trump has held in Nevada and seventh in Las Vegas since he embarked on his presidential bid in June 2015.

Trump has made only one campaign-style trip to Nevada since taking office, but his visit portends the significance of several Nevada races — most notably, for U.S. Senate and governor — where the Democratic and the Republican candidates appear locked in near-dead heats.

A recent Reno Gazette-Journal poll showed that Democrat Steve Sisolak has a 2-percentage point lead over Republican Adam Laxalt in the governor’s race, while Democratic Congresswoman Jacky Rosen, who’s challenging Republican Dean Heller for his Senate seat, has less than a percentage point advantage over him. Both leads fall within the poll’s 4.4 percentage point margin for error.

Trump also confirmed in a Saturday tweet his endorsement of Republican Danny Tarkanian, who’s running against Democrat Susie Lee in Nevada’s 3rd Congressional District. The president noted his “total and complete endorsement" of Tarkanian and called him a “great friend."

The Gazette-Journal poll and others have found Nevadans to view Trump in a more positive light than the rest of the nation, although Hillary Clinton won the state during the 2016 election.

But the president’s campaigning doesn’t end with the Thursday rally. He’s staying in Las Vegas overnight to host a fundraiser for Republican candidates on Friday. The event — which costs $15,000 per couple for a “VIP photograph" with the president and $50,000 per couple for participation in a roundtable — will benefit Heller, Tarkanian, the National Republican Senatorial Committee and the National Republican Congressional Committee.

Tarkanian’s campaign, in an email to supporters, said he will speak and appear on stage with the president Thursday evening. Cresent Hardy, the Republican candidate in the state’s 4th Congressional District, is also scheduled to take the stage Thursday night.

Before Air Force One lands just outside the casino-dotted Strip later today, here’s a look back at Trump’s prior visits to the Silver State. His visits have ranged from colorful rallies — including a wish to punch a protester in the face — to somber meetings with Las Vegas shooting victims.
