The vote came at a meeting that lasted nearly 10 hours and ended just before midnight. Superintendent Kristen McNeill had argued that schools were a “sanctuary” and she couldn’t recommend a full distance learning model, even though Washoe County District Health Officer Kevin Dick advised against any in-person reopening of schools.

Nevada’s two largest school districts are considering blended-learning models that would involve both in-person and virtual instruction as well as a delayed start to the upcoming academic year.

Candidates for nonpartisan seats on the board of trustees for Washoe and Clark counties school districts have posted and shared inflammatory statements on social media, including a post that referred to protesters hit by cars as “fleshy speed bumps,” which have drawn praise and criticism from voters.

Fifteen candidates, including incumbents Scott Kelley and Angela Taylor, will appear on the ballot as hopefuls for the Washoe County School Board — a panel that will have its hands full with both budget and personnel issues.

Ruben Murillo, a member of Nevada’s Complete Count education subcommittee, presented with Berreman. He said passing the resolution entailed making the schools available to community members participating in the census, such as opening computer labs to those who needed to fill out the census questionnaire or hosting events related to the census.
