Republicans look to unseat three incumbents after 14-year Democratic hold on Clark County Commission

The commission acts much like a city council — approving taxes, development plans and business permits, for example — in areas outside of a city's boundaries. Critically, the commission oversees the Las Vegas Strip, the heart of Southern Nevada's economy. Commissioners work with the city councils and various boards to tackle issues that span throughout the valley, such as water conservation, housing and public safety.

Mixed signals from governor, election considerations blamed for failure of death penalty repeal effort

No single cause of death is named on the legislative coroner's report, but interviews with involved parties suggest a combination of factors — ranging from personal belief, mixed gubernatorial signals, potential election-related considerations and the fact that the two senators responsible for hearing the bill work for the Clark County district attorney — helped kill the measure and keep Nevada as one of 24 states with the death penalty.

The letter, addressed to Vice President Mike Pence, who leads the White House coronavirus task force, called out the president for violating state emergency directives and federal public health guidelines, potentially increasing the spread of COVID-19 in the state. Trump held an outdoor rally at the Minden airport on Saturday and an indoor event in Henderson on Sunday; many of the thousands of attendees were seen congregating close together and without masks.

Clark County takes steps to prevent "the same type of tragedy" as Alpine Motel fire

Clark County commissioners are asking what they can do to prevent a tragedy like the fire that took six lives and injured 13 people on Dec. 21 at the Alpine Motel Apartments in downtown Las Vegas. The Department of Building and Fire Prevention has been tasked with notifying residents of inspections and providing a "priority" list of vulnerable properties.

Page, Hayes seats on Board of Regents will be open

Clark County Regents Kevin Page and Trevor Hayes have said that they will not run next year for re-election to the NSHE Board of Regents, which has jurisdiction over eight Nevada colleges and universities and more than 107,000 enrolled students. Regent Sam Lieberman confirmed over the phone on Friday that he will run for re-election. Washoe County Regent Rick Trachok said on Thursday that he was undecided.
