As court consider parameters of eviction mediation program, debate over how widely to open door

Romero is one of the many Nevadans calling on the Nevada Supreme Court to adopt regulations that would allow tenants or landlords to request mediation when an eviction looms. A Tuesday hearing to consider the two primary proposals comes nearly two months after lawmakers authorized a mediation program as a way of preventing a sudden rush of evictions when ongoing moratoriums created in response to the pandemic are lifted.

In the time of coronavirus, a significant chunk of Democratic playbook has been torn out and tossed out the window, with campaigns, the party and outside organizations nixing door-knocking from their get-out-the-vote plans in favor of phone banking, text message campaigns and literature drops. Democrats’ absence from the field has been filled by Republicans, who halted in-person campaigning at the beginning of the pandemic but resumed door-knocking and in-person events in June.

Castro’s strategy, perhaps more so than any other presidential campaign here, hinges on winning Nevada, the first state in the West to hold a presidential nominating contest and the most diverse of the four early nominating states. Not only has he visited the Silver State more than any other presidential hopeful, he has also participated in the widest diversity of events while he’s here.
