Republican Cresent Hardy is challenging Democrat Steven Horsford to three debates after both former congressmen easily triumphed in their respective 4th Congressional District primaries.

Hardy’s proposal letter, which was set for delivery on Wednesday, suggested one debate hosted by The Nevada Independent, one hosted by The Ely Times newspaper and a third, televised debate on the Spanish-language network Telemundo. The letter also includes a bit of snark riffing on Horsford’s decision to stay on the East Coast after losing to Hardy in 2014.

“We should all be able to agree that the aforementioned citizens of the 4th Congressional District deserve to hear directly from Mr. Horsford on why he abandoned them for the Washington, D.C. Swamp, a lavish home in an affluent Virginia suburb, and a job as a lobbyist making nearly four times the median income of the District,” said the letter, which was signed by Hardy campaign manager Ross Hemminger and sent along with Nevada visitor guide pamphlets. “Nevada deserves direct answers to these straightforward questions rather than carefully crafted talking points from the DCCC and vague, meaningless platitudes from your candidate.”

Horsford grew up in Nevada and has said he moved his family to the D.C. area so he would see them during weeknights working in Congress, but some of his primary opponents expressed frustration that he was embraced by the Democratic establishment after being out of Nevada for several years. Horsford’s campaign didn’t immediately respond to an inquiry about the debate proposal.

The 4th Congressional District race will be a rematch between the two men. Horsford was elected to the seat in 2012, but lost the re-election to Hardy in 2014, who in turn lost re-election to Rep. Ruben Kihuen in 2016. Kihuen is not seeking re-election after facing allegations of sexual harassment, which he has denied.

It’s not the first debate proposal to fly in the immediate aftermath of the primary election. Democratic Rep. Jacky Rosen issued a challenge to Republican Sen. Dean Heller Tuesday night that called for three debates in what’s expected to be a highly competitive Senate race.
