We will change the face of journalism in Nevada and establish new paradigms for nonprofit, community-supported news organizations.
The Nevada Independent is a nonpartisan, nonprofit news and opinion website founded by veteran political journalist and commentator Jon Ralston. The site is focused on ethical, unbiased and transparent journalism. In general, we aim to gather and disseminate important public information and increasing civic engagement.
We are supported entirely by charitable donations, along with event sponsorship revenue, from our members and donors. We disclose all our donors. Donors have no influence over our content.
The Nevada Independent website is a project of Nevada News Bureau, Inc., a 501(c)3 nonprofit founded in 2010 by political blogger, commentator, and journalist Elizabeth Thompson, who now serves as one of The Nevada Independent’s managing directors.
Our seasoned team of credentialed reporters and veteran columnists is the best in the state. We also publish occasional freelance work from talented journalists and columnists.
We retain nationally recognized pollster Mark Mellman to run high quality statewide polls and analyze data.
Our focus is twofold: the Nevada Legislature and important stories from across the state in our primary focus areas: government, policy, politics and business.
We provide content in both English and Spanish in order to serve the entire Nevada community.
Our content is free to everyone. Regular readers and supporters can choose to support our work by becoming Sustaining Members.
We have formed content-sharing agreements with many of Nevada’s rural newspapers, many of whom struggle to adequately staff their newsrooms for financial reasons. Stories written by The Nevada Independent are re-published free of charge by the following media outlets: The Fernley Reporter, Winnemucca Publishing, Elko Daily Free Press, and the Battle Born Media chain, which includes Mesquite Local News, The Ely Times, The Eureka Sentinel, The Lincoln County Record, The Mineral County Independent-News, and The Sparks Tribune. Read more about our partnerships here.
We maintain a firm firewall between news coverage, content on our opinion blogs and opinion page, and sources of revenue. Acceptance of financial support does not constitute endorsement of donors or their products, services, policy stances or opinions. We offer no right of review or influence over editorial content to anyone for any reason.
Nevada residents may submit op-eds of between 500 and 1,500 words in length to [email protected]. Submission of content grants The Nevada Independent exclusive licensing and rights-of-use once published. Please include a brief biography with submissions. All affiliations with government agencies or political organizations must be disclosed.
We are committed to providing the best online reader experience possible. Our website is clean and fast. We do not sell ads, bomb our readers with content-blocking pop-ups, or post annoying auto-play videos.
We are committed to a high level of reader engagement. We will happily publish well-written op-eds from private citizens, and we hope you enjoy the many ways you can interact with our content and our staff.
