How Biden's battle against resort and other 'junk' fees could affect Las Vegas

The war on junk fees has become a centerpiece of the president’s and Democrats’ political agenda. They’re banking on the issue being an electoral hit, believing junk fees to be universally unpopular. And the release of a proposed Federal Trade Commission (FTC) rule in October would give the effort teeth, creating a legal standard in which full prices must be displayed up front and additional fees must be legitimate.

Republicans look to unseat three incumbents after 14-year Democratic hold on Clark County Commission

The commission acts much like a city council — approving taxes, development plans and business permits, for example — in areas outside of a city’s boundaries. Critically, the commission oversees the Las Vegas Strip, the heart of Southern Nevada’s economy. Commissioners work with the city councils and various boards to tackle issues that span throughout the valley, such as water conservation, housing and public safety.

The governor’s announcement in late May that casinos could reopen June 4 initiated a flurry of activity on and off the Strip as sprawling resorts — some offering amenities akin to a small city — prepared to welcome back guests.

UNLV paid Comey $54,000, funded by donors, for visit to law school and dinner with VIPs

According to a contract between the university and a booking agency representing Comey, the former FBI director’s September 24 visit to UNLV and speech to the university, “The Ethical Leader,” cost the university’s law school a pretty penny, but a spokeswoman for the university said that all costs were paid by a donor and that Comey reduced his normal speaking fee for the event.
