In the weeks before Election Day, Republicans across the country and in Nevada appeared poised for significant victories, buoyed by polls indicating GOP wins up and down the ticket. But the much-hyped red wave never materialized.

In what has become a fight for political survival for Cortez Masto and a chance to finally re-enter electoral politics for Laxalt, the 2022 midterms have emerged as a grueling slog fought through tens of millions of dollars in advertising spending that have blanketed airwaves with nonstop attacks. 

Cano Burkhead is also receiving a half-million-dollar boost in a television ad buy from the Save Democracy PAC, which was founded last year and aims to help Democrats win down-ballot races in battleground states such as Nevada.

Family, friends and political colleagues honored him as a fierce champion of Nevada and “tough-as-nails” leader who also quietly offered help to those in need and inspired a new generation of leaders.

Though Latinos make up a third of Nevada’s population, they account for 36 percent of the COVID-19 cases in the state 26 percent have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

The Latino vote was a topic of conversation at the IndieTalks event, hosted by The Nevada Independent on Tuesday, which focused on the rise of nonpartisan voters. Those voters could be decisive in contests such as the race for Nevada governor next year.

Nevada is currently targeting the wait-and-see group in the latest phase of its vaccination effort, which has seen a shift away from mass vaccination sites in favor of smaller, more personal community-based vaccination sites and pop-up clinics.

With Trump's gains among Latino voters across the country, notably in Florida and Texas where Trump won and even in Nevada where Biden prevailed, organizers again pushed back against the myth of a monolithic “Latino vote” and emphasized the need for diverse and targeted outreach after a history of inadequate efforts from campaigns.

Latino voters have become increasingly sought after by campaigns vying to capture a community that represents almost 20 percent of Nevada’s eligible voting population. Latino voters were instrumental in helping catapult Sen. Bernie Sanders to victory in the Silver State’s Democratic caucuses earlier this year and propelling a blue wave in the state’s 2018 elections.

In the time of coronavirus, a significant chunk of Democratic playbook has been torn out and tossed out the window, with campaigns, the party and outside organizations nixing door-knocking from their get-out-the-vote plans in favor of phone banking, text message campaigns and literature drops. Democrats’ absence from the field has been filled by Republicans, who halted in-person campaigning at the beginning of the pandemic but resumed door-knocking and in-person events in June.

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders emerged from Saturday’s caucus not only with 47.1 percent support but a 26 percentage point lead over his next closest competitor, former Vice President Joe Biden. Political observers in Nevada anticipated a Sanders win, but they didn’t anticipate exactly how much he would win by.

“An opt-in opportunity to register relies on affirmation of one’s citizenship and an inadvertent false affirmation of citizenship for the purpose of registration is not only a federal crime but [also] grounds for deportation or denial of a naturalization application,” said Oliker-Friedland.

Mexican immigrant Adriana Arellano Cruz had her $5,000 bond posted by the ¡Arriba! Las Vegas Workers Center, an immigrant advocacy group, on Tuesday, and has been reunited her with her three American citizen children.
