Coronavirus adds new complications for Nevada's homeless and those trying to help them

As cases of COVID-19 have proliferated, advocates have raised concerns about how the estimated 7,169 people experiencing homelessness on any given day in Nevada will fare when shelters are cutting back on services to minimize contact with people during an outbreak that threatens those living in close quarters, the elderly and people without access to facilities to properly clean themselves.

After fires, City of Las Vegas plans motel, apartment registry and inspection program

Less than two months after the Alpine Motel Apartments fire killed six people and revealed gaps in the city’s inspection processes, city officials introduced a draft of a Multifamily Residential Rental Registry and Inspection Program to “improve current practices” in preventing fires. The proposed program aims to ensure compliance with Las Vegas fire safety code by implementing more regular inspections of smoke detectors, fire alarms and exits.

Vegas council votes to extend criminal penalties to sidewalks not covered by encampment ordinance

The Las Vegas City Council on Wednesday is expected to vote on an ordinance to allow city officials to “designate hours of sidewalk cleaning” in areas that are not already covered by an approved ordinance that makes it illegal to sit or lie down in many parts of town. Deputy City Attorney Jeff Dorocak says that the ordinance is intended to give allow the city to clean areas where encampments would be "still available," such as sidewalks or parking lots in commercial or industrial areas.

Counties, cities spent millions lobbying the Legislature

The report, which was compiled by the state Department of Taxation, is the product of a law that requires all local governments — everything from cities and counties to police departments, school districts and hospitals — to disclose any expenditures above $6,000 on “activities designed to influence the passage or defeat of any legislation.”
