Nevada Supreme Court: 4 lawmakers not violating Constitution by having other public jobs

In a 4-3 ruling, the court determined that the four legislators did not violate the state Constitution's prohibition of working for multiple branches of state government because none of their employers are part of the judicial or executive branches.

Nevada Supreme Court’s pending case backlog at lowest level in years

But through the 2020 fiscal year, the court has taken significant steps to cut down its substantial and well-documented backlog of pending cases. According to the Nevada Judiciary’s 2020 annual report, the court’s backlog of cases fell to 1,688 at the end of the fiscal year, the lowest level in the last five years and down from the more than 2,000 pending cases reported at the end of the 2019 fiscal year.

Nevada Supreme Court will allow legislative lawyers to participate in major payroll tax case

The 5-2 decision, which was published on Friday, will allow attorneys for the nonpartisan legal division of the Legislature to represent Senate Majority Leader Nicole Cannizzaro and Senate Secretary Claire Clift in a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of an extended payroll tax (about $100 million over two years) approved in the 2019 legislative session without a two-thirds vote normally required for any tax increase.

Nevada Supreme Court orders significant limits on cash bail

In a 6-1 ruling published Thursday, justices authored a majority opinion that created a new three-tiered process for lower-court judges and prosecutors to follow before requiring a person to pay cash bail in order to be released before trial. It also requires judges to take into consideration a person’s finances before assessing any cash bail as a condition of release.

Clark County District Court suspends jury trials, in-person ‘non-essential’ court proceedings over coronavirus fears

The order, signed by Chief Judge Linda Bell and Nevada Supreme Court Chief Justice Kristina Pickering, states that beginning Monday all scheduled “non-essential” court hearings will be conducted by video or telephone, decided on the papers or rescheduled unless otherwise directed by a judge. It is up for review at least every 30 days and will continue until rescinded by a subsequent order.

Nevada 2020 election season begins with judicial candidate filing period

This year, two of the seven Supreme Court seats in Nevada are up for nonpartisan election — those of Justice Mark Gibbons and Chief Justice Kris Pickering. Gibbons, who served as chief justice in 2008, 2014 and 2019, has announced that he will be retiring from the bench and will not seek re-election this year.
